Materials

Titanium Grade 5 (6AL 4V)

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400)
  • Material: The most widely used titanium alloy, containing 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. Balances high strength with low density and excellent corrosion resistance.

  • Mechanical Properties:

    • Yield strength ~120–130 ksi (more than double that of commercially pure Titanium Grade 2).

    • Excellent fatigue resistance and fracture toughness.

    • Density is ~45% that of steel, enabling significant weight savings.

    • Retains useful mechanical properties up to ~800°F (425°C).

  • Corrosion Resistance:

    • Very good in oxidizing environments, seawater, and chloride exposure.

    • Resistant to stress corrosion cracking and crevice corrosion.

    • Slightly less corrosion resistant than Titanium Grade 2 due to alloying, but still excellent compared to stainless steels and nickel alloys.

  • Manufacturing Considerations:

    • More challenging to machine than steels due to low thermal conductivity and work hardening tendency. Requires carbide tooling, sharp edges, and slow cutting speeds.

    • Weldable with proper procedures, though heat treatment may be needed to restore properties.

    • Supplied in annealed or solution-treated and aged (STA) condition for fasteners.

  • Applications in Fasteners & Components:

    • Aerospace fasteners (bolts, screws, nuts, studs) where high strength-to-weight ratio is critical.

    • Military and defense systems, including airframes, missile structures, and naval hardware.

    • Motorsports and high-performance automotive fasteners where weight savings improve performance.

    • Medical implants and equipment, leveraging both strength and biocompatibility.

    • Chemical and offshore environments requiring strong, corrosion-resistant bolting.

Key Takeaway for Fasteners

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the workhorse titanium alloy for high-performance fasteners. It combines twice the strength of Grade 2with excellent corrosion resistance and significant weight savings, making it ideal for aerospace, defense, marine, chemical, and medical applications where both strength and lightness are critical.
