Materials

Nickel Alloys: Incoloy (N0945, N0945X)

Incoloy® 945 (UNS N09945)
  • Material: Nickel–iron–chromium alloy, age-hardenable, with molybdenum, copper, niobium, titanium, and aluminum for enhanced strength and corrosion resistance.

  • Mechanical Properties:

    • Minimum yield strength around 125 ksi (annealed + aged).

    • Excellent ductility and toughness for a precipitation-hardened alloy.

    • Resists chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.

  • Manufacturing Considerations:

    • Machining is challenging due to work-hardening; requires rigid tooling and controlled feeds/speeds.

    • Typically supplied in solution-annealed + aged condition.

    • Welding possible with matching fillers but may require post-weld heat treatment.

  • Applications:

    • Fasteners for oil & gas downhole equipment, wellheads, and subsea components.

    • Pump shafts, valves, and high-strength bolting in sour service environments (H₂S/CO₂).

    • NACE MR0175/ISO 15156 approved for severe sour service.

Incoloy® 945X (UNS N09945X)
  • Material: Higher-strength variant of Incoloy 945, with the same nickel–iron–chromium base chemistry but optimized for greater mechanical performance.

  • Mechanical Properties:

    • Yield strength typically ~140 ksi or higher in annealed + aged condition.

    • Maintains excellent corrosion resistance, similar to 945.

    • Improved strength-to-size ratio allows for smaller, lighter fasteners in high-load designs.

  • Manufacturing Considerations:

    • Same machining and heat-treatment challenges as 945, but tighter processing controls are often required.

    • Used when both strength and sour service resistance are critical.

  • Applications:

    • High-strength bolting for subsea and downhole oilfield equipment.

    • Fasteners in severe sour service where hydrogen embrittlement and SCC resistance are mandatory.

    • Critical components in deepwater oil & gas, high-pressure pumps, and wellhead assemblies.

Key Takeaways for Engineered Fasteners
  • 945 → Balanced alloy for strength + sour service corrosion resistance.

  • 945X → Higher-strength upgrade, enabling smaller fasteners with the same load capacity in the toughest subsea/oil & gas environments.
