Stellite 6B

Material:

  • Stellite 6B is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten alloy designed for extreme wear, corrosion, and high-temperature resistance.

  • Part of the Stellite family of cobalt-based alloys, commonly used in high-performance components subjected to abrasion and heat.


Mechanical Properties:

  • Hardness: Extremely high (Rockwell C 45–55 in as-cast; can be higher with surface treatment).

  • Wear Resistance: Excellent, even under heavy loads and abrasive conditions.

  • Tensile Strength: Moderate (~100–150 ksi depending on heat treatment).

  • Temperature Resistance: Retains hardness and corrosion resistance up to ~1000°F (540°C).


Corrosion & Oxidation Resistance:

  • Outstanding resistance to oxidation, scaling, and general corrosion.

  • Performs well in acidic, oxidizing, and marine environments.

  • Ideal for cavitation- and erosion-prone environments.

Manufacturing Considerations:

  • Machining: Very difficult; typically requires grinding, EDM, or specialized tooling.

  • Casting & Powder Metallurgy: Common manufacturing methods due to hardness.

  • Joining: Welding is possible but challenging; often mechanical attachment or brazing is preferred.

  • Surface Finishing: Often ground or polished for dimensional accuracy and performance.
