Materials
Nickel Alloys: Nickel (200)
Nickel 200 (UNS N02200)
Material: Commercially pure wrought nickel (≥99.6% Ni). Very low carbon content ensures resistance to embrittlement.
Mechanical Properties:
Moderate strength compared to alloyed nickel grades (yield strength ~15–20 ksi annealed).
Excellent toughness and ductility, even at cryogenic temperatures.
Retains useful strength up to ~600°F (315°C); higher temperatures may cause graphitization.
Corrosion Resistance:
Outstanding resistance to many reducing chemicals, caustic alkalies, neutral salts, and dry fluorine.
Not recommended in strong oxidizing environments (e.g., nitric acid).
Performs very well in caustic soda service, one of its primary uses.
Manufacturing Considerations:
Excellent workability: easily formed, machined, and welded.
Cold-working increases strength (Nickel 201, the low-carbon modification, is used where elevated temperature resistance is needed).
Annealed condition often chosen for machining and fastener fabrication.
Applications in Fasteners & Components:
Chemical processing equipment fasteners exposed to caustics or neutral salt environments.
Electronics and electrical components due to high thermal and electrical conductivity.
Marine hardware in mildly aggressive seawater/brine (though Monel alloys are usually preferred for more demanding marine service).
Food processing equipment where resistance to neutral/alkaline environments is required.
Key Takeaway for Fasteners
Nickel 200 is valued not for ultra-high strength, but for its purity, corrosion resistance in caustic/alkaline media, and toughness at extreme low temperatures. It’s a niche fastener material, often chosen when chemical compatibilityor cryogenic toughnessare more critical than maximum mechanical strength.
