Stainless Steel A286

Stainless Steel A286 (UNS S66286, ASTM A453 Grade 660A, 660B, 660D)
  • Material: A precipitation-hardened iron-nickel-chromium alloy stainless steel containing additions of titanium, molybdenum, and vanadium. Commonly supplied for high-strength fasteners under ASTM A453 Grade 660 conditions, providing excellent elevated-temperature mechanical properties and corrosion resistance.

  • Mechanical Properties:

    • High strength: yield strengths typically range from approximately 85–150 ksi depending on the ASTM A453 Grade 660 condition (A, B, or D) and heat treatment.

    • Excellent creep rupture strength and stress relaxation resistance at temperatures up to approximately 1300°F (700°C).

    • Good fatigue resistance, toughness, and ductility compared to many other high-temperature alloys.

  • Corrosion Resistance:

    • Excellent resistance to oxidation and scaling at elevated temperatures.

    • Good resistance to atmospheric corrosion, fresh water, and many industrial environments.

    • Maintains corrosion resistance and mechanical integrity under prolonged high-temperature service conditions.

    • Better resistance to stress corrosion cracking than many conventional high-strength alloy steels.

  • Manufacturing Considerations:

    • Readily machined in the solution-annealed condition but exhibits work hardening during machining.

    • Requires solution annealing and precipitation hardening (aging) to achieve specified ASTM A453 Grade 660 mechanical properties.

    • Can be welded using established procedures, although post-weld heat treatment may be required to restore optimum properties.

    • Suitable for hot and cold forming operations used in the manufacture of engineered fasteners and precision components.

  • Applications in Fasteners & Components:

    • High-temperature bolts, studs, nuts, and threaded fasteners manufactured to ASTM A453 Grade 660 requirements.

    • Gas turbines, steam turbines, and power generation equipment.

    • Aerospace engines, exhaust systems, and structural fastening applications.

    • Oil & gas equipment requiring high strength and elevated-temperature performance.

    • Industrial furnaces, petrochemical processing equipment, and other critical high-temperature applications.

Key Takeaway for Fasteners

Stainless Steel A286 is chosen for high-strength fasteners operating at elevated temperatures, particularly in aerospace, power generation, and oil & gas applications. Its combination of precipitation-hardening strength, corrosion resistance, and thermal stability makes it ideal for critical bolting and high-performance components where conventional stainless steels would not suffice.
