Plastics

Plastics (Engineering Plastics for Fasteners and Components)

Material:

  • Plastics are synthetic polymers used for engineered fasteners where weight savings, corrosion resistance, or electrical insulation are priorities.

  • Common engineering plastics used in fasteners include Nylon (PA), PTFE, PEEK, Acetal (POM), and Polycarbonate (PC).

Mechanical Properties:

  • Strength: Moderate compared to metals; some high-performance plastics (like PEEK) can approach low-grade metals in tensile strength.

  • Toughness & Ductility: Many plastics exhibit good impact resistance and flexibility, reducing brittleness under shock loads.

  • Weight: Extremely lightweight (~1/7th the density of steel).

  • Temperature Resistance:

    • Standard plastics (Nylon, Acetal) up to ~200°F (93°C).

    • High-performance plastics (PEEK, PTFE) up to 500°F (260°C).

  • Chemical Resistance: Excellent to acids, bases, and many solvents. PTFE and PEEK are extremely chemically inert.

  • Electrical Properties: Non-conductive, making them ideal for insulating fasteners and components.

Manufacturing Considerations:

  • Machining: Plastics can be machined, drilled, or turned, but thermal expansion and melting must be managed.

  • Injection Molding & Extrusion: Common for high-volume plastic fasteners like screws, clips, and standoffs.

  • Joining: Can be glued, heat-staked, or press-fit; threading requires attention to avoid cracking.

  • Customization: Colors, additives (UV stabilizers, flame retardants, fillers) can be tailored to specific applications.

Applications in Fasteners & Components:

  • Lightweight fasteners: Screws, nuts, washers, and clips in electronics, automotive, and consumer goods.

  • Chemical processing equipment: Non-metallic fasteners for corrosive environments.

  • Electrical assemblies: Insulating fasteners, standoffs, and spacers.

  • Food and medical industries: Plastics like PEEK and PTFE are FDA-compliant and non-toxic for sanitary applications.

  • High-temperature or chemical-resistant applications: PEEK and PTFE fasteners for aerospace, oil & gas, and chemical plants.
